chinese dragon mask
The Chinese Dragon masks are a lot different to the Bauta mask. The dragon masks was introduced way before the Bauta masks in the fifth millennium BC (4001 BC). As the name of the mask states that this mask was originated from china. Dragon mask is a symbol of fortune and prosperity in Chinese culture and it is usually made to be very complex, coloured red, gold and blue and decorated with feathers and fur. A familiar dance called the dragon dance actually came from the idea of the Chinese Dragon mask. One of the main events that the dragon mask is worn on is the New Year’s. This particular species of masks were made out of a variety of materials such as stone, glass, leather, cloth, wood, or paper.
The Bauta mask were not introduced until the 16th century, at that time this mask was only meant to be worn by the upper class. This mask was originated from Italy. The purpose of this mask was to hide your identity. It had two holes for the eyes and one for the mouth. This mask came in different colours such as black and red. The fashion was to wear it with a black TRICOR no (three pointed Venetian hat), Zen dale (long hood made of satin and macramé) and long cape. It was useful for a variety of purposes, some of them illicit or criminal, others just personal, such as romantic encounters. Due to the shape of the Bauta mask it can stand upright on its own and so can be displayed easily on furniture or any flat surface.
Although both masks have differences they also have many similarities.
Some of the similarities are:
- Both the Chinese mask and the Bauta mask were used in celebrations and festivals.
- Red is a common colour in both of these masks and is found very easily.
- Paper is one of the materials that the masks are made of.
- These masks were also used in theatres.
- Both masks are made to conceal your face.
To conclude, both masks are special in their own unique way. The Bauta mask can be used as a decoration where the Chinese mask cannot. Instead the Chinese Dragon mask influenced the Chinese Dragon dance.
